Is it better to stay in St Kitts or Nevis?

By Carles Barcelo. Updated October 27, 2023

Despite Saint Kitts and Nevis being the smallest country (both land area and population) in the Caribbean, the twin island does not fall short with their gorgeous beaches, abundant rainforests, and genuine cultural encounters. Both islands have preserved very distinctive characters. St Kitts is larger, livelier, and has a bustling capital city, whereas the sister island Nevis is calmer, quieter, and offers a more laid-back atmosphere. There are not many restaurants in Nevis, but one will have no problem finding authentic and delicious gastronomy on the island.

History enthusiasts are sure to have a field day with the compelling mix of West Indian, French, and English influences and the numerous ancient British fortresses that mark the landscape of Nevis. The island is perfect for history-minded solo travelers who seek beautiful white-sand beaches and couples who want seclusion. Saint Kitts, on the hand, is for both families and couples who would prefer busier yet stunning white-sand beaches and sparkling waters with markets, bars, and restaurants.

Whether one may be traveling as a family, a couple, or alone, the best places to stay on the island all showcase the island’s legendary warmth. If you are interested in where to stay in St Kitts and Nevis, you may also be interested in where to stay in Antigua and where to stay in St Maarten.

Choosing where to stay in Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts

St KittsSaint Kitts is 5 miles wide and 23 miles long - it has an area of 68 square miles. Thus, it is easy to reach all resorts and hotels by car within a day, wherever you choose.

In the early 2000s, the sugar industry (previously the island’s main form of export) was overtaken by the booming tourism industry. The last railway in the Caribbean, St. Kitts Charming Railway - originally built to transport sugar from the fields to Basseterre - takes passengers on a 3-hour tour through St. Kitts’s history and the most breathtaking scenery. St. Kitts is notoriously friendly due to the welcoming locals who are keen to share the best places to eat and explore. The assortment of restaurants and bars by the water is unquestionably the number one spot for tourists and locals.

Not to forget the marine life and the panoramic views of Cockleshell Beach on the south-eastern edge of the island - it is the liveliest spot to revel in the sun. However, if looking for serenity, check out Majors Bay, also in the southeast, perfect for escaping the crowds. The unique black sand beach of Dieppe Bay was created from a long-dormant volcano and can be found on the north of the island.

Nevis

Nevis

Nevis is 36 square miles and sits across a narrow channel from its sister island, St Kitts. This island is rarely crowded, so one can likely have the entire beach to themselves - with just about 12,000 residents. Nevertheless, Nevis has an international airport, and long-haul flights do not land on the island. However, from St Kitts, Antigua, or St. Maarten, it is easily reached by ferry or plane.

Nevis is undeniably one of the most well-preserved and unspoiled islands in the Caribbean - especially unique with its a 3,232-foot, (mostly) dormant volcano, Nevis Peak. It is the highest peak on the island and visible from everywhere. Adventurous travellers may wish to take the risk of climbing the peak with the promise of stunning views. This island offers green pastures with blue skies, clean air, and vast empty beaches - nature encourages one to appreciate all the surrounding beauty.

Regardless that Nevis is tiny, there is no shortage of activities and events on the island - from sunbathing on the stunning beaches to snorkeling to hiking in the jungle to having a rum punch to end the day. There is something for everyone. If seclusion and serenity are what you are daydreaming of, Nevis is the best option for you. There are various places to stay in Nevis, stretching from extravagant hotels to local guest houses, fitting all budgets.

The rugged stone buildings of the Inn have an appealing sense of history, but the interior is modern and funky. There are 11 simple cottages, a superb restaurant, and a spring-fed swimming pool. Both children and adults are welcomed to the Inn. However, Golden Rock has been known for its honeymooners and romantics.
