Las Grutas, Argentina: Best Hotels, Beaches & Warm Waters

By Fausto Antelo. Translated by Pedro Nunes. March 24, 2026

Las Grutas is a charming seaside town in northwest Argentine Patagonia, located in Río Negro province within San Antonio Oeste municipality. Its name comes from the stunning cavern-like formations in its cliffs, constantly shaped by sea erosion.

Known as the Argentine Caribbean, Las Grutas is famous for having the warmest waters along Argentina’s coast, with crystal-clear, deep-blue seas. This unique microclimate results from warm northern currents surfacing over cold southern waters in the San Matías Gulf, creating a paradise for beach lovers.

These natural features make Las Grutas a highly popular tourist destination, increasingly favored by families, couples, and adventure travelers alike.

The Best Beaches in Las Grutas

Las Grutas beaches

The beaches of Las Grutas stand out for their warm and crystal-clear waters, and for a truly unique environment. The landscapes of this seaside town feature high cliffs, diverse rock formations, and natural caves that inspired the name of the region. The tides constantly reshape the shoreline, revealing wide stretches of sand when the water recedes.

Because the coast of Las Grutas consists of a series of tall cliffs, reaching the beaches requires descending various stairways or ramps. Each beach has its own characteristics, making it important to know them in order to choose the most suitable option depending on the type of experience you are looking for.

Choosing the right Bajada also requires understanding the tide schedule. Along the Las Grutas coast, the sea rises and falls approximately every six hours, with two high tides and two low tides daily. For this reason, consulting a tide table is essential, along with considering personal preferences, since in this town the rhythm is set by the sea.

The oldest Bajadas are 1, 2, and 3, which border the town’s commercial center. Later, Bajadas 4, 5, 6, 7, and 0 were created, along with others that are unnamed or have specific names, such as La Rinconada, Terrazas de Mar, and Los Acantilados.

The first Bajadas are generally the most affected by tides, while from Bajada 4 onward, the beaches are wider and more available throughout the day, making them the most frequented by tourists.

Bajada Cero

Bajada Cero is ideal for enjoying the sea during low tide and features natural pools formed along the reef, making it a safe spot for a refreshing dip.

First and Second Bajadas

The First Bajada is very popular and features prominent beach bars and restaurants, perfect for enjoying good food and music. The Second Bajada, also called “the town center Bajada,” like the first, offers an ideal balance of proximity and ample beach space. These two Bajadas are the favorites for families.

Bajada Tres

From Bajada Tres, the views become more picturesque as the characteristic rocky formations of Las Grutas appear. This Bajada is a favorite for water sports enthusiasts, offering boat stops and the possibility of diving initiation sessions.

Bajadas Cuatro and Cinco

Bajada Cuatro and Bajada Cinco attract younger travelers with their modern beach bars, music, and sports competitions, creating a lively atmosphere.

Bajadas Sexta and Séptima

The beaches at Bajada Sexta and Bajada Séptima are the least crowded, offering a much calmer environment. Bajada Sexta has no dining or commercial services. Bajada Séptima, however, has a beach bar, café, and children’s play area. Many tourists consider this one of the best and most premium beaches in Las Grutas.

Terraza al Mar

La Rinconada

For those seeking privacy, La Rinconada Bajada is the best option, as it is slightly hidden. It is very popular among fishing enthusiasts and has a seafood restaurant, offering a chance to enjoy excellent cuisine away from the center.

Los Acantilados

The Los Acantilados Bajada is located south of the town center. Tall cliffs dominate the landscape, and its beach is one of the most natural and least modified by human activity. The surroundings are more rustic than other beaches, yet it offers the best views and the strongest connection with nature.
