The historical and architectural heritage of San Miguel de Allende makes it one of the most beautiful and must-see cities in Mexico.
The best area to stay in San Miguel de Allende is the historical center, as this is where you will find all of the city´s most interesting places. You can easily walk the entirety of the center, where you will find the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the city´s emblem, which has a beautiful tower and a colonial Mexican style facade.
Another emblematic place to visit is El Jardín, one of the city’s main squares, which is surrounded by shops and street markets, perfect for a beautiful walk or to sit out on one of the many terraces for lunch or even have a drink whilst listening to the Mariachis.
On Calle Mesones, the city´s most fashionable street, you will find excellent restaurants offering international and local food, as well as concerts, theater shows, dance and art exhibitions. It is also the perfect shopping spot, offering many shops, markets and craft fairs.
Not far from the city you can also visit the archaeological area of Cañada la Virgen, which contains some well-preserved pre-Colombian ruins. You will need to set aside two and a half hours in order to visit all of it. Although most of the accommodations are located in the historic center, the most touristic area of San Miguel, there are other neighborhoods that have a good accommodation offer:
El Caracol
The Caracol area is a nice-mixed neighborhood located on a hill. Too close to the center to walk but far enough to feel part of one of the local neighborhoods, it offers one of the best views over San Miguel.
The accommodation offer ranges from condos with a pool and casitas with terrace and barbecue to small hotels with an authentic Mexican flavor.
La Aldea
La Aldea is a private community with an exceptional location just a few steps from downtown, very close to shops, galleries and restaurants, that continue to maintain the charm of the Mexico of yesteryear.
Guadalupe
Also a few minutes from downtown we can find Colonia Guadalupe, a charming and typical Mexican town neighborhood, located near the Art and Design Center, La Aurora Factory and other commercial areas.
There is a very strong artistic community that continually organizes events such as the artist studio tour and wall decoration by graffiti artists.
