What is the best area to stay in Verona?

By Carles Barcelo. Updated October 27, 2023

The best place to stay in Verona is the Historic Centre, where you will be surrounded by Roman ruins, charming churches and some of Verona´s most prized architectural gems, as well as being close to the star attraction: Verona Arena (Arena di Verona), declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

Exploring the Historic Centre on foot, you will come across the Piazza Bra, Verona´s largest piazza, many cafés and restaurants, as well as several main points of interest: the Arena di Verona, the Palazzo Barbieri and the Gran Guardia Palace. The impressive Arena di Verona was built some two thousand years ago, and is currently used as venue for opera shows and contemporary music concerts.

But there is much more to Verona than that, the area is teeming with places to be explored: the Arco dei Gavi, Castelvecchio Museum, the incredible Ponte Scaligero, La Piazza delle Erbe, the Piazza dei Signori, the Torre dei Lamberti where you can enjoy amazing views over the city, the Basilica of San Zeno, the Scaliger Tombs, the Santa Anastasia Church, and if you cross the Adigio river you can also visit the Roman Theatre.

If you like to go shopping you can easily spend a few hours at the Via Mazzini, which is full of clothes shops. For eating there are many bars, trattorias and restaurants all across the centre, where you can join crowds of lively diners who laugh and talk the night away, something which is so typical of Verona. On the map, which shows the most convenient area to stay in Verona, you can see a selection of some of the best located hotels.

Historic Centre, the best area to stay in Verona

Historic Centre VeronaThe medieval town of Verona, set along the Adige River in the Veneto region of Italy is altogether romantic, historic, and artistic. The historic centre of Verona is the best area to stay due to its traditional architecture, grand piazzas, and access to top touristic sights.

As the setting of three Shakespearean plays (Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona), the centre of Verona is incredibly poetic. Staying in this area allows prime access to the Piazza dell Erbe - market centre and city forum. This incredibly ornate square is lined with historic palaces, traditional Italian homes painted with age old frescoes, trattorias, and landmark towers. The fountain of Madonna Verona, located in the centre of the piazza is a noteworthy symbol of the city. The Roman Arena, built almost two millennia ago, still hosts operas and other theatrical events. Don’t miss the Torre di Lamberti for stunning views of the bustling piazza and medieval city.

The historic centre is easily accessible by transit. The primary train station servicing Verona is within walking distance of this area.
