The best place to stay in La Spezia is the old town which can be found right next to the port. Home to a labyrinth of quaint pedestrian streets, the old town conceals what beauty is left of this now large and important port town. In addition to its pleasant atmosphere, it is also conveniently located close to the train station and the main port for connections to the Cinque Terre. There are also many bus routes leaving from here, which connect to the area’s most beautiful villages, such as the Gulf of La Spezia, Lerici and Pontevenere.
La Spezia is known as the gateway to the Cinque Terre and the Gulf of La Spezia. As provincial capital and the gatekeeper to one of Italy’s largest ports, it is the point of departure for ferries heading to the Cinque Terre, as well as being the largest nearby city. It is a must see for anyone visiting the region by train or car, and its abundance of accommodation makes it a good place to use as a base for visiting other areas.
A central pedestrian street named “La Via Prione” underpins the old town, starting at station and running right down to the port, which is full of beautiful boutiques, cafés and restaurants where you can really delve deep into the Liguria culture and lifestyle.
