Where is the best area to stay in Luang Prabang?
By Carles Barcelo. Updated October 27, 2023
The ancestral city of Luang Prabang, situated in the North of Laos, was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995. This amazing town is set at 700 metres above sea level, where the river Nam Khan and the Mekong River meet. Being the main tourist destination in Laos, and given that it is considered by many to be the most beautiful place in the whole of Southeast Asia, food, drink and accommodation prices are higher than in the capital, Vientiane.
Luang Praban is a relatively small city, making it easy to access all areas on foot, no matter where you are staying. However, the city centre is where the majority of hotels, shops and nightlife can be found, so we recommend staying in this area of town.
The centre of Luan Prabang consists of four main streets, upon where hundreds of monks from the neighbouring areas descend every morning as part of a “soul collecting” mission. The city’s most important places can be found within the city centre, such as the National Museum and the famous **Night Market.**On the map, which shows the best area to stay in Luang Prabang, you can see a selection of some of the best located hotels.

Cheap accommodation in Luang Prabang
Laos, like most of its neighboring countries in this part of Asia, continues to be a destination for backpackers, young people traveling on a budget. Luang Prabang offers for this type of travelers a wide range of cheaper accommodation than hotels that are always more expensive.
Guest Houses: they are usually small hotels set up in houses where we can find rooms for ourselves for about 15 euros a night. There are also more elegant Guest Houses that can be more expensive.
Hostels: the cheapest option to stay in Luang Prabang are hostels with shared rooms. In these hostels, we can sleep for less than 10 euros a night, although there are also more modern and equipped hostels that are as expensive as a Guest House. For the modest price of 10 euros, we can find hostels with a shared bed that offer us breakfast included and clean towels to shower. What more could you want!
Most accommodations in Luang Prabang also offer an airport shuttle but it is not included in the price and is paid separately.
