Best area to stay in Vientiane
Without a doubt the best place to stay in Vientiane can be found just 15 minutes from the airport, in the centre, near to the Mekong River and the night market, which is a chilled area that offers many different and unforgettable tourist spots to visit.
When exploring the centre, make sure to visit the beautiful Patuxai Arc de Triomphe Monument, which conceals a deep history. You will also find many Buddhist temples in the area, such as the Wat Si Saket, a remarkable building, as well as beautiful gardens and countless Buddha. Another special temple is the Wat That Khao which is home to an immense Reclining Buddha. Make sure you also visit the Wat Si Muang, which unlike the other temples in Vientiane, is a lively place where you will come across monks and the devout going about their daily prayers, at almost any time of the day. It is also worth exploring the Pha That Luang temple, which is set just a few minutes outside of this area.
But that´s not all, as along the banks of the Mekong River you will find locals and visitors taking a walk, doing exercise, enjoying its restaurants, and by night, buying clothes and souvenirs in the market. Another mandatory stop off point is the COPE Visitor centre, set less than 2km out from the centre, where you can find out about the history and suffering of Laos. To end your visit of the area´s most emblematic places, you can jump on a bike and cycle to the bus terminal, from where you can travel to the Buddha Park, which is a park offering a deep history to be uncovered as well as a group of large Buddhist monuments.
For shopping, be sure to visit Lao Textiles, the local Morning Market, Vientiane Centre Lao and many other similar places. If you are only visiting for the day, we recommend booking a Tuk Tuk Safari, which is a very typical thing to do in the area. A guide will pick you up in a brightly coloured Tuk Tuk from your hotel and take you on a day trip to visit many places selling food, a temple, local market, and a visit to where they make sticky rice in bamboo, which is typical of the area, among other important places. For nightlife, Baravin Savor´s club and Wine 95 are two great options.
